Dieing hope

Burgdis rolled her eyes. "Luka, I can't stand anyone. I hate people. In fact, your the first person I've talked to this long." she said. She suddenly grew suspicious. "Why do you even care if I can stand you anyway?" she asked in a mutter.

Pausing, he lowered his head silently, "Because you were ready to kill me back there. Frankly, I'm surprised you're still talking to me. Let alone not growling." he rubbed his side against a tree silently and looked away, eyes blazing with complicated thoughts.

Burgdis stifled a giggle. She rolled her eyes and sighed. "Yes I was...but isn't know it was the poor scrawny wolf I ran into-the first wolf I pitied." she said softly.

Luka grinned at her, detecting her giggle before turing away and hiding his face from the female and sighing, "You know, just because I was smaller does not mean I changed in attitude. Why do you feel different from each encounter?" he sat silently now, waiting for her reply with perked ears and his tail curled around his paws.

Burgdis shrugged and looked over her shoulder. She looked back and stepped forward. "I don't know what your talking about?" she asked innocently.

Giving a half smile, the male turned his head away and chuckled softly, "Okay, sure. Well, it was nice meeting you stranger, but it seems I have to go." Angling his body away, he lifted his head and sighed dramatically before walking slowly towards the outer edge of the forest, tail swinging as his ears remained perked.

Burgdis rolled her eyes and began going back to her tree root den. ironically it was the sme way he was going. Thankfully, Her path led her east and down a low incline. The dry river bed was beginning to fill. Burgdis narrowed her eyes. How would she get across when it swells? Fortunately, the river was only a creak right now, and only went up to her ankles.

Standing easily over the bank, the male flicked his ears and yawned. Luka looked around, wondering where his path would lead him next, where he'd resign for the night, when he'd eat next. He turned and lopped into a deeper part of the water and sat, staring intently into the cool surface in hopes of seeing a fish glide by. His intense focus taking him into another state of mind as the sun traveled over the sky and made his coat gleam thickly.

Burgdis climbed up into her tree den and burrowed down into the back. Sunlight rays glided to and fro carelessly. It was peaceful.

Sitting up, the male sighed after licking his paw silently then turning and walking, long set stride and easily seen grace. Luka lifted his head and began thinking while moving, the sun set and the moon rising, he moved like a ghost, I've gotta find a place to settle down...a good and secluded area where no one will find me... He moved faster, a destination set like ice in his head now.

Burgdis's splayed paw began hurting. She sighed and stretched it out. Burgdis had never gotten used to it. It was a nuisance, and only running fast and faster made it work properly. She lay on her back, trying to find a comfortable. She was emotionless...so why...why was she feeling things?

Moving fast, the males long limbs stretched and his muscles were easily seen as he began circling the territory with a wide diameter. Luka flattened his ears and began to shrink towards the ground, legs seeming to bend and blur with the trees around him while his fur was a grey flash to the eyes of anyone and anything that happened to be close enough to catch a sight of the large male.

Burgdis grew slightly hungry, so she crawled out of her cave and jumped down. She waded through the water till she got to the bank. Burgdis shook her fur and trotted off into the woods. Every once in a while, he foot would trip her. She growled at it, and took off in a sprint.

Stopping at the edge of a cliff, the male lifted his head and sighed into the wind. He felt his legs throb with the power and effort of his run, his ears lifted to catch the sounds coming from the land below him. Grey fur ruffled and wild, he sat, and howled.

Burgdis heard the howl. She hesitated, but kept at it. She caught the scent of a buck. She sped in its direction. It was soon when she ran out of stamina. She panted but saw moonlight streaming in through the canopy of trees. The buck was eating quietly. Burgdis crouched down and began crawling towards it. She was quiet at first, but her twisted paw made a weird popping sound. The deer bolted up, and looked at her. They stared at each other before Burgdis jumped up. The deer bolted, she sped up, going even faster by some weird help of her paw. The buck knew running wouldn't help him, so he turned around and rammed her with his antlers. Her breath was knocked out, and she noticed she was bleeding. She growled and stood back up. The buck snorted and brandished his antlers. She narrowed her eyes and got in a concentrating stance. The buck charged, she moved out to f the wat and and tripped him. Everything seemed to be in slow motion. She pounced on him and ripped open his neck. She acknowledged his life with a small prayer. She ste hungrily.

Turning, he lowered his body as a crash was heard in the nearby bushes. Another wolf moving loudly and without a care as it seemed to be searching for something. Luka rolled his shoulders and stood, fur rippling in the wind as he breathed out slowly then waited, for some reason, not wanting to be found by the other wolf. Only wanting to remain alone and free of a fight or any difficulties.

Burgdis finished it off, leaving the rest for the crows and other scavengers. She trotted off and flicked her tail, trying to forget the series of events that had happened that day.

To distracted with the wolf and the wave of confusion when it turned tail and ran, Luka lifted his head and frowned before being thrown off his feet. He staggered into an upright position, knowing that, what ever had tossed him, it was big. Very big considering how far he flew. The male stood and shook himself, turning his head franticly before flattening his ears with widening eyes. A bear looming over him with bloody claws, small, squinted beady eyes, and standing well over 7 feet tall. Horror seized the male as he froze with an iron grip while the bear lowered it's head and let loose a roar fit for dinosaur.

Burgdis heard a bear roar. She looked behind her. At the carcas a huge grizzly stood over... Luka? Ugh, she'd never get rid of him. She narrowed her eyes and faulterd in her steps. Should she help him? Or, should she leave him in the hands of fate. She flashed back to when she first met him. Something inside her stirred. She howled and took off with a flash. She crashed into the bear, tearing at the bear's shoulder. The monster fell, but grabbed her by the back. He threw her into a tree. She lay limp, the stir faded as she lay there.

Eyes widening farther than he new they could, Luka launched forward with a snarl and used his large form to shove the bear over a steep incline. Even as it toppled, a furious roar echoed, a thump fallowing as Luka looked over and saw it getting up, shaking its big scruffy head and looking up at him with depthless black eyes and roaring. The bear was not giving up, but instead returning to all four paws and begging a fast run towards a slope that would get him back to the wolves. Luka turned and ran to Burgdis, nudging her gently and whining, "He's coming back..GET UP!" he turned, the bear almost on top of them as it growled and seemed to smile. Luka turned, shoving his nose beneath the female wolf's shoulder then hoisting her onto his back and turning, running with long legs and muscles rippling.

Burgdis's eyes cracked open. She saw Luka and the bear chasing them. She growled, but knew she was too weak to fight it.

Slipping under a low overhang, the male turned his head and sighed. The bear roaring in frustration before swinging at the shrubs and hanging moss. Luka, panting hard, turned and began running again, knowing the bear was stuck on the other side of the overhand and so only putting a considerable amount of space between the two before letting Burgdis slip to the ground gently and then flopping down himself, sides heaving as his legs burned along with his side, which he just now realized exactly how badly had been scratched. Luka heaved harshly then, staring into the sky with wide eyes while blood trickled from his open wound steadily.

Burgdis opened her eyes. "Are you OK?" she whispered as the bear roared, and trailed away. She got up roughly. "Your hurt!" she said hoarsely. She licked the wounds caringly. Not knowing what else to do, she lay back down.

Turning his head, the male grunted as his eyes cleared of fog. The clouds rolled silently overhead as Luka stood up, staggering a bit then steadying himself as best he could. Grey pelt matted with blood, he turned and limped toward a steep slope and sat down. His thoughts rolled without a pace. Wondering how he ended up back with the female. And how he had even survived a bear attack. Let alone from a bear that big.

Burgdis stood up too. She didn't know what was wrong with her. Before she had met Luka, she was heartless, content and didn't care about life. She now knew she had taken it for granted. She sat down, looking away from the male.
