The Sound of the Wake... (Open) Empty

... Is hypnotizing. The constant rhythm of the waves softly breaking against the shore sounded like a lulaby to the small tan lump of fur that was struggling to stay awake atop the sandy cliff. Sitting on the edge, her vibrant green eyes seemed to almost glow, reflecting the light from the bright full moon above, and the much smaller diamonds of stars dusted throughout the sky. Moonlight rippled off of the water's surface far away on the seemingly never ending sea before her. Belle's eyes were narrowed as she sleepily peered out at the beautiful scene before her, rocking slightly with the constant sound of the soft rush of water beneath her. Behind her, the dark trees where she'd come from appeared to be seething with shadows; dangers that the pup just couldn't face alone. Her small pawprints leading away from the dim forest to where she was now were barely visible in the moonlight. Shadows were everywhere, some of them seeming to have sharp teeth or long, spindly arms that reached at the pup. Yet she was too tired to be afraid anymore. She'd been awake for two days straight, too afraid of the darkness and the shadows that lurked around every corner to let herself drift away to sleep. She'd thought that coming here, to the sea, to the open ground where there wasn't supposed to be any shadows, she could finally sleep. Well, there were shadows. Many of them. And the darkness behind her that lurked in the shady trees were frightening. Yet the constant breaking of the water against the rocks on the cliff she was perched ever so daintily on appeared to be lulling the small pup to sleep. She was simply too tired to stay awake any longer. Her stomach grumbled at her, upset at the lack of food she'd provided for it. She sighed mentally, but decided not to let it bother her right now. She'd gone a while without food aswell. She couldn't catch anything unless she was lucky, and that didn't happen often. This small, skinny scrap of fur was having a hard time simply surviving. But right now she couldn't even think about that stuff. She just had to try and stay awake.

Maybe if I close my eyes for just a little while... she thought, showing the smallest hint of a smile at how good that would feel. Just a few peaceful seconds to sleep. Maybe if she only closed her eyes she'd be able to stay awake longer later on. Yeah... That sounded good. Continuing her slight rocking movement, timing it perfectly with the waves, Belle let her heavy eyelids close. Exhaustion swept over the small tan pup immediately, and she yawned a large yawn that made her small frame shake with the effort of it all. Slowly, she lowered her body to the ground, succombing easily to the heaviness that surrounded her. Resting her head on the cold sandy ground underneath her, she curled her small legs in toward her belly as a light breeze blew past, chilling everything it's whispy fingers touched. Just a little bit of sleep... That's all she wanted. That's all that mattered.

A loud thud and then a flutter of wings made the small female pup jump up immediately, fightened out of her wits. Her emrald green eyes were wide now, staring at the dark depths of the forest behind her. Shadows danced across the sand and rocks before her eyes, making it look as if the grimlins that belong in children's monster stories were mocking her. Lowering her ears, Belle shrunk to the ground in fear, thinking that anything could come out of those shadows at any time. One of the spindly arms of the shadows would touch her. Frightened, Belle whimpered a small, pitiful sound that wouldn't have scared even the tiniest of mice. She couldn't go to sleep now, not after that horrible noise went off. And was that flapping sound really a bird or some awful flying monster with sharp teeth and claws who would love to have Belle as a midnight snack? Shuddering, Belle was no longer enjoying the scenic night around her. No, instead, she was fearful of it. All those shadows held a mystery. They all could be home to any number or assortment of monsters she was afraid of; monsters that taunted her in her dreams at night. Those dreams she hadn't had in two nights' time. Oh how she longed for sleep. Her body craved it; her eyes were heavy, and she had no energy anymore. Would she ever sleep? Or would the shadows continure to taunt her at every corner she turned? Right now, Belle only wished for one peaceful night.
