''I'm not supposed to be here, I'm not supposed to be here, I'm not supposed to be here,'' Ember whispers to herself. But she needs food, and who wouldn't pass up a chance for an easy meal?
Ember notices a young lamb wobbling around. She runs forward, then pounces, sinking her teeth into the lamb's neck. The lamb lets out a tiny bleat, then goes limp.
Ember carries her meal to a tree nearby. She doesn't want to be too close to the humans, especially the farmers. She learned the hard way a long time ago that the black cylinders hunters and farmers carry are ''guns.'' And guns, Ember learned, can kill wolves.
